Right now there is incredible hydrogen hype where investors get into a gold rush mood and then there are strange requests. During the gold rush on the Klondike in 1896, the gold miners at least knew how to transport the gold away. But last week I was on the phone with a renewable energy consultant and learned the unbelievable.

He has a consulting request from an investor who wants to produce hydrogen with solar power in southern Italy, but has no idea how to transport the hydrogen to Germany. Italy doesn't even have a decent supply of solar power in the summer months, so why not sell the power locally? There are ships for LNG, Liquified Natural Gas. But methane becomes liquid already at -162°, hydrogen only at -252°. This 90° is a dramatic difference in refrigeration. Pressurized tanks are so voluminous that the Krone headlined the 2nd generation Toyota Mirai "Toyota Mirai: Blue whale outside, sardine can inside". In addition to liquid and gas, chemical methods of transporting hydrogen are still being considered.

If the mountain does not come to the prophet, then the prophet goes to the mountain. Logical consequence, industries that need hydrogen go where hydrogen can be produced easily. These are very sunny areas with very cheap land. In the first industrial revolution, heavy industry located where there was high quality coal in close proximity. Today, energy carriers are transported around the world; this is quite easy with coal and oil, but LNG ships are at the limit of what is economically feasible.
